Mrs. Winifred Mitchell Carter, affectionately known as "Winnie," 91, of Bloomfield, CT departed this life on December 6, 2019 peacefully at home in the loving embrace of her family.  She was born in Abaco, Bahamas on March 3, 1928 to the late Mabel McKenzie and Richard Mitchell.

Winifred grew up in the Bahamas and in 1948 traveled with her best sister-friend Ida Viola (Adderly) Wimbish to West Hartford, CT, where they each were employed and made their home for several years. Winifred became a naturalized citizen of the United States on September 16, 1955. Later, after meeting and marrying Robert Carter, Winifred, Robert and their children resided in Charter Oak Terrace in Hartford for several years before moving to Bloomfield, CT in 1962.

Winifred's first career was making a loving home for her husband and family, which included successfully raising their five children, with a strong dose of humor for good measure. In 1954, Winifred completed a Nurse's Aide Course and was employed by Saint Francis Hospital. In later years she was employed by Hartford Hospital and completed a Certified Nursing Assistant program at Greater Hartford Community College. Subsequently, she retired in 1990 from Ensign-Bickford Industries in Simsbury, CT after 21 years of employment.

Winifred's church life was always very important to her as well.  She became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Hartford, CT in 1957 and over the course of decades served her church as a member of the Senior Choir, as a volunteer in the Soup Kitchen, and until declining health forced her to limit her physical activity, as a Shiloh Baptist Church Senior Usher-- service that she loved.

Community service and social activities were also a big part of Winifred's life. She was a member of and/or served as an officer of numerous local organizations. Among others, she was a Lifetime Member of the West Indian Social Club of Hartford; a member of The Travelettes; the Pelatis Auxiliary of Iota Phi Lambda; Sigma Phi Lambda; Independent Order of Mechanics Rose of Sharon Chapter #1; Simsbury Grange #197; Women of Hope, The Red Hat Society, and the Bloomfield Seniors. Winifred also attended The Caring Connection of Windsor, CT in recent years.

Winifred leaves to cherish her memory, daughters Callye (J. S.) Holmes and Sandra Carter Brown; sons Reginald (Helena) Carter, Anthony Carter, and Robert Michael Carter; grandchildren Daron (Deidre) Burks, Jerel Carter, Erik Carter, Jamal Carter, Kevin Brown, Sabrina Brown, Pearl Carter and Autumn Carter; and great-grandchild Nylah Carter. She is also survived by her beloved sister-friend/partner-in-shenanigans Viola Wimbish and family; cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, godchildren and other extended family members including Mabel Darling and Jeannie Carter; and a host of friends including James Burks, Sr.  Winifred was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Carter, sister Geneva Mitchell Boneby, and other family members and friends who stretch their arms to welcome her into the heavenly kingdom.
