Reverend Martin Jackson-Uston, Sr Obituary

Reverend Martin Jackson-Uston Sr., 71, of Philadelphia, PA, departed this life on Friday, November 15, 2024, at home.  He was born in Hartford, CT, on January 14, 1953, to the late Marzell Uston and Flossie Jackson Byrom.  Reverend Jackson-Uston spent his early years in Hartford, CT, attending Hartford Public High School. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was the owner and founder of The Institute of Health & Healing Sciences, LLC, which is a private therapeutic counseling practice—providing individual, family, and group counseling for those experiencing issues with Mental Health, Addictive Disorders, and Wellness Recovery. His practice has been in existence since 2002.  Rev. Jackson-Uston Sr. had been a practitioner in the field of substance abuse, beginning in 1988.      

Rev. Jackson-Uston was a current student attending Trinity Theological Seminary in Newburg, IN, pursuing his Ph.D., studying the philosophies of World Religions and their relationship to Mental Health and Addictive Disorders. He held a Master of Arts Degree in Christian and Islamic Studies from the Hartford Seminary, a Master of Education in Counseling and Psychology earned from Cambridge College, and became licensed as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor with the State of CT in 1991.

Rev. Jackson-Uston became an Ordained Minister within the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Denomination in 2014; presenting workshops and training events to the clergy, in efforts to enlighten the community concerning matters of addiction and mental health.  

He was predeceased by his daughter, Miracle Jackson, and three brothers, Frank Jackson, Charles C. Jackson and Alfred L. Jackson. He leaves to celebrate his life, seven children, Martin Jackson Uston Jr. (Monica McNulty) of Windsor, CT. Nikishia Morgan (Shadeed Morgan) of Philadelphia, PA.; Martina Jackson of Berlin, CT.; Marzell Jackson of New Britain, CT.; Odomma Mack, of New Britain, CT. Justin Williams, of Hartford, CT. and Mash-Had Jackson, of Meriden, CT. Eleven grand-children Khyre Jackson-Uston, Kamarah Morgan, Shadeed Morgan Jr., Anaya Mack, Aleiah Jackson, Kamryn Morgan, Quran Leon, Larenz Mack, Adrianna Williams, Brycen Uston, and Rylee Uston. He is also survived by two brothers, Thomas B. Jackson (Hattie Roberts), of Rocky Hill, CT., and Samuel Jackson, of Oakland, CA. Additionally, he was beloved by a special niece/daughter, Terrie Copeland-Rice, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  

Rev. Jackson-Uston’s  commitment to the well-being of those around him was a pillar of strength, teaching his children and grandchildren the importance of kindness, hard work, and integrity.

Beyond his immediate family, Rev. Jackson-Uston was a father figure to many others in his community. Whether offering advice, lending a helping hand, or simply providing a listening ear, he had an innate ability to make others feel valued and supported. His compassion and generosity touched the lives of countless people, and his legacy of kindness will continue to resonate with all who knew him.

Rev. Jackson-Uston believed in the power of community and was always ready to assist those in need. He gave selflessly of his time and resources, and his guidance helped shape the lives of many, whether through mentorship, friendship, or his quiet acts of service. His influence extended beyond his family and left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate to have crossed his path. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, strength, and service will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

A celebration of Rev. Martin Jackson-Uston  life will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. with Funeral service to follow from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, 2051 Main Street, Hartford, CT. 06120. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to American Cancer Society to support Prostate Cancer Research.
