Rev. Dr. Wayne Anthony Carter, the eldest child of the late Martharee Monts Carter and Luther Lavorgia Carter, was born on March 16, 1957 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, kiCT.
As a young child, Wayne demonstrated a love for learning and the church. He questioned everything while seeking knowledge. He accepted the Christ at the age of six years old. Oftentimes, he shared the story as he felt a hand lifting him out of his seat when the Invitation to Discipleship was extended. His parents weren't surprised, they saw it coming.
He spent his younger years with two loves, NASA and preaching the funeral for his teddy bear. His teddy bear was eulogized more than you can imagine with his siblings acting as his congregation. He said that he wanted to be the first black man in space.
When at Clarence A. Barbour School, he excelled academically where he was awarded the top academic award at his eighth graduation. While at Barbour school, he was introduced to the S.P.H.E.R.E program at Westminster School. After eighth grade, he enrolled at Westminster starting what would be the impetus for his siblings, Gena, David, and Bruce to follow.
He graduated from Westminster in 1975 and enrolled in Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where he received his AB in Psychology in 1979. He received his Doctorate in Divinity from the Martha's Vineyard Theological Seminary.
He had an intense love for music. He was a DJ at Bucknell and later interned at CBS Records in New York. While he achieved what he thought was his dream position, the Lord had other intentions for his life.
After a few years in New York, he returned to Hartford and began working for the United States Postal Service, where he worked for five years. However, he always knew that something was missing.
He accepted his call to preach and and delivered his first sermon, "The Last Mile of the Way," and was licensed to preached by Rev. Dr. D.S.Craig.
Soon after Pastor Craig's passing, he was trained and ordained into the Christian ministry by Pastor LeRoy Bailey of the First Baptist Church. Two years later, he was installed as the third pastor of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
During his decades-long tenure at Mt. Moriah, the congregation grew to well over one thousand members. The growth came out of his passion to evangelize, prayer, teaching, and developing leaders and ministries. While are Mt. Moriah, the congregation purchased additional properties in Hartford including the former Snyder's supermarket, a 12,000 square feet office building, and four houses.
Wayne Carter was the FIRE FROM THE MOUNT. He was renowned for his preaching gift. He preached the Word. He was known to quote numerous passages of scripture while walking pews. As he was proclaiming, he was known to ask: "Is that enough Word for you or do you need some more?"
He married Kim Newland from Englewood, NJ. In their twenty-three years of marriage, they were blessed with two wonderful sons, Brantley LeRoy and Jordan Isaiah.
He was voted as Chairman of the Hartford Board of Education with the largest vote total for anyone for that position. He also taught at Hartford Seminary in the Black Ministries Certificate Program. He was the former president of the Greater Hartford Ministerial Alliance and Vice President of the Connecticut State Missionary Baptist Convention.
Later in life, he married Norma Yvette Glasper when they together organized The Fellowship of the Fire, a ministry where he continued to demonstrate his preaching and teaching acumen.
Dr. Carter passed on August 23, 2025 at home where he lived with his brother, Martin.
He leaves to mourn his passing, three sons: Pastor Daniel Ryan Cody (Tiffany and his mother Sister Cynthia Cody), Brantley Carter. Esq., and Sergeant Jordan Isaiah Carter; three grandchildren: Josiah Cody, Olivia Cody, and Brielle Cody; two sisters: Min. Luvern Mott and Gena Ruth Carter M.D.; three brothers: Martin Luther Carter, Esq., Apostle David Salvatore Carter, and Dr. Bruce Lavoisier Carter, along with nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous others whom he faithfully licensed, ordained, and mentored for effective service in ministry.
As a man, he was just that... As a man of God, he was one of God's greatest preachers.
