It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Paula Beth Gripes, affectionately known to her friends and family as Mouse. Paula was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, who transitioned to her final resting place on November 16, 2024 at 11:43PM at the age of 76. Born, prematurely, on May 9, 1948, in Hartford, Connecticut to her loving parents, Betty Anetta Wilson Gripes (Lynch) and David Gripes, Paula spent her life grounded in the love and values instilled in her by her parents.
Paula was preceded in death by her cherished mother, Betty, and father, David, as well as her older brother, Lawrence "Larry" Johnson. Paula is survived by her baby sister, Val-Gene Gripes, her niece, Darryen Blair Gripes, and her beloved nephew, Jonathan-David Tate Gripes, and a host of family and friends who will all miss her deeply.
Paula was an alumnus of Bloomfield High School and the Traphagen School of Fashion. In her spare time, Paula found solace and joy in her favorite hobby—sewing. From the age of 4 Paula showed an affinity for fashion and would sit at the foot of her grandmothers where she learned the Art of Sewing. As she grew up, she continued to learn and hone this craft. After Traphagen, Sewing became her creative outlet and allowed her to express her artistry and share her creations with loved ones, always leaving a piece of her heart in every stitch. Her passion for sewing was a testament to her vibrant personality and the love she had for those around her.
Paula found fulfillment in her professional life through her work at American Airlines, Fleet Bank, Bank of America, and Easter Seals. Her dedication and hard work were hallmarks of her character, and she formed lasting connections with colleagues and clients alike.
Paula's heart was anchored in her faith. As a child and into young adulthood, she was a member of Metropolitan AME Zion Church. As an adult she joined Blackwell AME Zion Church where she continued to serve the Hartford community for over 30 years. Her involvement brought her joy and a sense of belonging and purpose, as she forged deep friendships with fellow church members and contributed selflessly to the life of the congregation.
During her time at Blackwell she was an Administrator, a Trustee, a Stewardess, President of the Stewardess Board, President of the Lay Council and secretary/clerk for the quarterly conferences. She was also the president of the Hospitality and church decorating committee a bench choir member and a Missionary.
Paula's legacy is one of kindness, resilience, and unwavering love and support. She touched the lives of many, and her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Hartford Healthcare, Specifically her Heart Failure team, Dr. A Scatola, APRN Dawn S., Her team Nurses, Amanda, Kelly, and Jo T and Social Worker Kerry. The Hebrew Rehabilitation Center where she took her final breath with Nursing staff whose care and compassion during this time has been a source of comfort and very much appreciated.
As we remember "Mouse", let us carry forward her spirit of love, creativity, and faith. She will be profoundly missed, and her memory will forever remain in our hearts.
