Leroy S. Williams, 89, of West Hartford, passed away due to COVID on Sunday, December 20, 2020. Leroy was a loving husband, father and grandfather . He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen Ligon Williams and four children. Leroy was predeceased by his eldest son (Jerry Williams) by five days, also from COVID.
Leroy was born in Claysburg, Pennsylvania, son of the late Borkin and Mary Williams. He graduated from high school in Marion, South Carolina. He met and married his college sweetheart at Benedict College where he was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Benedict College in Columbia, SC. He served in the US Army from June 1957 to June 1959. His Masters Degree in Urban Education was granted from Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT.
Leroy was an excellent provider and had many exciting careers including real estate, lab chemist at Pratt & Whitney, and employee at Stanadyne. He taught in the Hartford Public School system; Barnard Brown, Quirk Middle School and Hartford High School for over thirty years. He had a deep love for teaching, learning, and sharing knowledge.
In the mid-2000s Leroy and Helen moved to SC for a few years. Leroy cultivated many vegetables including a huge, sweet potato that was state fair worthy. His love of gardening followed him everywhere he went. He enjoyed planting sunflowers and gardening at Brookdale Chatfield in West Hartford where they lived.
He was an avid walker and participated in races to raise money for sickle cell anemia. He was 87 years old when he participated in his final Thanksgiving Manchester Road Race. One of his favorite pastimes was socializing with his best friend, “Scoop” at the dog track. Leroy wanted to be remembered as “a very intelligent man, who loved flowers and he loved people and he could raise hell if he wanted to. No one could walk on me. I was fair and straight and treated everyone good.”
He leaves to cherish loving memories his devoted wife, Helen Ligon Williams; two daughters, Sheryl Williams and Gwendolyn Williams Satchell (Morris); two sons, Gregory Williams and Leroy “Roy” Williams II (Amy); four grandchildren, Raymond Williams, Rahsaan Williams, Darrius White and Jullian White; one brother, John Williams (Earlene); one sister-in-law, Dorothy Ligon Smith, Cincinnati, Ohio; a loving group of nieces, nephews, and cousins in Connecticut, South Carolina, Ohio, Georgia, and New York who will miss him dearly. He also leaves behind a diverse group of buddies, friends, and acquaintances. He is predeceased by his parents, son and siblings, Malachi, Borkin Jr., James, George, Elouise, and Ernest.
