Joseph R. Thompson, 84, of East Hartford, CT, transitioned peacefully at Complete Care at Kimberly Hall on Friday December 29, 2023. He was born December 26, 1939, in Winnsboro, SC, to the late James Thompson Sr. and Josie (Rabb) Thompson. Joseph married his wife Helen (Curby) Thompson. Together they had three children, Bernard Jerome Thompson, Tammy Denise Thompson, and Andrena Copeland.
He moved to Hartford, CT in 1966. He worked as a right-hand man to his brother, Glover Thompson who started Thompson Furniture Store in 1974. He supervised the daily operations and the workforce of the business. He continued as an employee of Chambers - Thompson Moving and Storage until he retired.
Joseph was a great provider to his family and loved going on annual family vacations and Sunday drives. He was known to everyone as “Uncle Joe” and was known to have the Thompson “sweet tooth”.
He was a member of New Life in Christ Holy House of Prayer under the leadership of Bishop L. Thompson. For a number of years, he was supervisor of the church bus operations and was in charge of maintaining the church property.
Joseph was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Helen Thompson of over 60 years. A son, Bernard Thompson. Three daughters, Tammy Thompson, Andrena Copeland (Theodore), and Lorraine Broughton (Gary). A grandson Javoni Gilmore (Dyshanna). Two granddaughters, Brittany Thompson and Keiana Amaker (Julian). Two great-grandchildren Giana Gilmore (known to him as “Boop”) and Jeremiah Amaker. A baby sister, Margaret Morrison, an admired nephew, Bishop L. Thompson, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He is predeceased by six brothers, Glover Thompson, James Thompson Jr., Robert Lee Thompson, Hosie Thompson, Elijah Thompson, and Willie Thompson. Three sisters, Lula Mae Kelly, Josie Thompson, and Virginia Adams.
Burial will take place at Silver Lane Cemetery in East Hartford, CT 06118.
