Jimmie Lee Ward Mayo Obituary

Jimmie Lee Ward-Mayo, 78, of Bloomfield, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on December 1, 2020 after fighting a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born in Dawson, Georgia on June 1, 1942 and was the seventh of eleven children born to the late Rev. Fred Ward, Sr. and Virdell (Toombs) Ward.  Prior to retiring, Jimmie was self-employed as a beautician for over 50 years and, along with her daughter Daychelle, owned the Essence of Beauty Hair Salon.  Jimmie’s Christian journey began as a child in Dawson, Georgia where she was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.  Upon moving to Connecticut, Jimmie continued her Christian journey as an Evangelist and a member of Abundant Life Tabernacle Church of Hartford, CT.  Jimmie was no stranger to the word of God and she enjoyed sharing scriptures and ministering to family, friends and those she met along the way.  Following her diagnosis with breast cancer, Jimmie volunteer her time supporting patients at the Saint Francis Hospital Smilow Cancer Center.  In addition to her faith in God, the joys and pleasures in her life were spending time with family, preparing her favorite southern meals for all to enjoy, savoring baked sweet treats and watching her beloved Dallas Cowboys.  Jimmie leaves to cherish her memories her three children,  Benita (Cecil) Campbell, Mark Ward (Debbie Mason-Ward) and Daychelle Ward; her husband James Mayo; six grandchildren,  Joseph Ward, Dayvon Albert, Courtney Ward, Kalen Ward, Shaina Stewart and Jayna (Nikki) Wallace; five great-grandchildren,  Jamiah Ward, Elijah Ward-Brice, Justin Wallace Williams, Izaiah Wallace and Anyáh Wallace; seven brothers and sisters,  Gladys Batson, Mary Jones, Fred (Wyrot) Ward, Jr., William (Pete) Ward, Homer Ward, Alvin Ward and Larry Ward, Sr.; a special niece and nephew, Melissa Star Jones and Jayce Moore; and a host of family and friends.   In addition to her parents, Jimmie was predeceased by her sisters Inez Ward and Verna Williams and her brother Billy Roy (Bill) Ward. The family would like to thank all those who helped Jimmie during her time of need, including the staff at Saint Francis Hospital Smilow Cancer Center and Hartford Healthcare at Home.  Memorial donations in Jimmie’s memory may be made to the Violet Phoenix Foundation, 4619 Calvert Road NW, Huntsville, AL 35816.  The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, December 11, 2020 at 10:00 am; followed by a celebration of life service at 11:00 am at The First Cathedral, 1151 Blue Hills Ave, Bloomfield, CT.
