Mrs. Helen Ligon Williams, a beloved member of the community, passed away on February 19th, 2024. She was born on July 8th, 1933, in Waterloo, SC, to James Furman and Lulee Sullivan Ligon. Helen was known for her exceptional talents as a singer, artist, and teacher, and she had a deep passion for community service.
From a young age, Helen was involved in Laurel Hill Baptist Church, where she dedicated herself to organizing vibrant Vacation Bible School programs. Even during her college summers, she continued this work tirelessly. After graduating from Sanders High School, she pursued her studies in elementary education at Benedict College in Columbia, SC.
Helen married Leroy Williams, her college sweetheart from Marion, SC, and began her career as a teacher. She conducted her practice teaching at Sanders Elementary School, where she had the joy of teaching her nephew, Butch. Following Leroy's service in the military, Helen moved to Hartford, CT, where she worked at The Institute of Living. It was there that she formed lifelong friendships with Lilliee Webley and Adilah Salem.
In Hartford, Helen enjoyed many enriching years filled with travel, artistic expression, and working in daycare. She is survived by her daughters Sheryl Williams of New York City, NY, and Gwendolyn Williams Satchell (Morris) of New Britain, CT, as well as her son Leroy Williams (Amy) and Gregory Williams. Helen also leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Raymond, Raashan, Darius, and Julianne.
She is remembered fondly by her aunt, Carrie Eldon of Atlanta, GA, brother-in-law, John Williams (Earline), special nieces Saundra Ligon and Melissa Ligon, and nephews Harold Jr. (Butch), Ronald Sullivan, Bruce Smith, Glenn Sullivan, David Allen, and Keith Ligon, along with numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Williams, her son, Gerald Williams; three brothers, Clarence Sullivan, James Harvey Sullivan and David Ligon; two sisters, Flossie Sullivan Ligon and Dorothy Ligon Smith.
Helen Ligon Williams will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, creativity, and dedication to others will continue to inspire generations to come.
