Grattan Gareston DaSilva Alleyne

It is with deep sadness and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Grattan Gareston DaSilva Alleyne, who departed this life on June 3, 2026, at the age of 81.

Born on July 15, 1944, in the parish of St. Thomas, Barbados, Grattan was the beloved son of the late Myrl and Livingston Alleyne. He spent his early years in Barbados, where he worked as a chemist before emigrating to the United States in 1968. He made his home in Hartford, Connecticut for many years before settling in Bloomfield where he built a life centered on hard work, family, and service to others.

Throughout his career, Grattan was known for his dedication, precision, and strong work ethic. He was employed by Holt Precision and Azzag for many years before spending more than four decades as a Metrology Technician with Quality Plus in Chicopee, Massachusetts. His colleagues respected him for his knowledge, reliability, and commitment to excellence.

Grattan was truly a jack of all trades. There seemed to be nothing he could not repair, build, or improve. Whether helping family, friends, or neighbors, he generously shared his skills and wisdom. He was also an exceptional cook and was especially famous among family and friends for his beloved Bajan Sweet Bread, a treat that brought joy to many gatherings and celebrations.

Above all else, Grattan cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, cousin and friend whose quiet strength, kindness, and unwavering support touched countless lives.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Betty (Carter) Alleyne of Bloomfield, CT; his children, Shannon Alleyne (Beverly) of Hartford, CT, Cheryl Gilliam (Eric) of Bloomfield, CT, and Gary Alleyne (Shenda) of Bloomfield, CT.

He is also survived by his siblings, Yolanda Ramsay, Mario Alleyne, and Zelia Kellman (Adrian), all of Barbados; Yvette Drakes of Hartford, CT; and Vanwert Alleyne (Jennifer) of Hagerstown, MD.

Grattan was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Mark Alleyne of Hilton Head, SC; Justin Alleyne of Bristol, CT; Corey Gilliam (Danielle) of Bloomfield, CT; Jamaal Alleyne of Hartford, CT; Jahron Alleyne (Alexis) of Hartford, CT; Kaylah Gilliam of Bloomfield, CT; and Jayden Alleyne of Bloomfield, CT.

He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Justin Alleyne Jr., London Gilliam, Julius Alleyne, Savannah Alleyne, Zoey Gilliam, Carmelo Alleyne, Yara Gilliam-Brown, and Paityn Alleyne.

He was predeceased by his parents, Myrl and Livingston Alleyne; his brothers, Pritchard Alleyne and Ricardo Alleyne; and his sisters, Angela Alleyne, Mencha Collymore, and Magna Harper.

He also leaves to cherish his memory, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,  sister-in-laws and many friends.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Grattan's dedicated nurse, Frances McComb, for her compassionate care and support. Special thanks are also extended to Dr. Brett Duncan, Dr. Abhishek Jaiswal and the entire team at the Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute for their exceptional care, kindness, and professionalism.

Grattan's legacy lives on through the family he loved, the lives he touched, and the countless memories he created. He will be remembered for his generosity, craftsmanship, sense of humor, culinary talents, and the steadfast love he gave to those around him.

Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
