Gladys Ward Batson

Gladys Ward Batson, 91, of Hartford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2022. She was born in Dawson, Georgia on March 31, 1931 and was the second of eleven children born to the late Rev. Fred Ward, Sr. and the late Virdell (Toombs) Ward.  She accepted Christ at a young age while attending Shiloh Baptist Church in Dawson, Georgia.  Seeking better opportunities, Gladys moved to Hartford where she met and married the late Cecil Batson.  Gladys was a member of Mount Olive Church Ministries. Some of the joys and pleasures in her life were spending time with her family, cooking meals for all to enjoy, and dancing whenever she heard good music.

Gladys’ greatest joy was her family.  She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She leaves to cherish her memories seven children: Patricia Ward, Shirley Ward, Michael Jackson, Leonard Batson, Ronald (Denise) Batson, Linda (Odell) Williams, and Clifford Batson; nine grandchildren:  Alex (Melissa) Ward, Patrice (Raymond) Ward-McBride, Shawn (Shawn) Reid, Gregory (Kinishishi) Batson, Sr., Ronald (Renia) Batson, Rondell (Enjoli) Batson, Odell Williams, Vincent Williams, Jakoby Williams; eleven great-grandchildren: KeAndre (Cassie) Easterling, Sr.,  Daryn McBride, Kyley Williams, Quincy Baker, Jayla Thomas, Gregory Batson, Jr., Kanai Knott, Isabella Fugedi, Merlani Ward, Raelyn Batson, Royal Batson; her sister Mary Jones; her brothers:  Fred (Wyrot) Ward, William “Pete” Ward, Homer Ward, Alvin Ward, Larry Ward and a special brother Joseph Ward, Sr.; and a host of family and friends.   In addition to her parents and her husband, Gladys was predeceased by her sons Rev. Calvin Ward and Gregory Batson; her grandson Merlin Ward and her great granddaughter Raegan McBride; her sisters:  Inez Ward, Jimmie Ward and Verna Williams; and her brother Billy Roy “Bill” Ward.
