Edith Lazu was born on January 16, 1981 in Humacao, Puerto Rico. At the age of one, she emigrated to Hartford, Connecticut, were she spent most of her life before settling in New Britain, Connecticut. Edith had a flair for life and embodied many characteristics that brought happiness to those around her.
Nurture
As the eldest sister of five siblings, she had an innate caring nature. It is no surprise that she chose a career in early childhood education. She touched the lives of so many children as a preschool teacher at Kindercare in Rocky Hill. Children always flocked to Edith. She possessed a down to earth sense of humor that put them at ease. She simultaneously inspired their upmost respect and love. She was magic in that way.
Love
Family was an important part of Edith’s life. Alongside her life partner, Dachia Ortiz, they created a loving home for their children, Amarilis Ruperto and Aichad Ortiz, who were the light of her life. They were all incredibly close. She was their comforting parent, but also their best friend.
Joy
Edith’s warmth and hospitality knew no bounds. She loved hosting friends and family, often for an evening of board games, karaoke, and great food. Edith always inspired joy and laughter. She will be remembered for the way she lit up a room with her bright smile.
Spirit
Edith passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 12, 2023. Her seven-month battle with colon cancer served as proof of her indeterminable spirit. Although she was diagnosed at stage IV, she never gave up and fought courageously until the very end. She never gave up hope. She was an inspiration to all those around her. She will be forever missed.
Peace
Edith is survived by her loving partner, Dachia Ortiz, her daughter, Amarilis Ruperto, and her son, Aichad Ortiz, her mother, Zoraida Rosa, her siblings, William Lazu, Melissa Traore née Burgos, Freddie Burgos, and Amily Colon, and her mother-in-law, Migna Rodriguez, known to the family as Guelly.
The funeral service will be held at All Faith Memorial Chapel in South Windsor on Monday, June 19, 2023 from 10am to 12pm to be followed by burial at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield.
