Angela Alleyne Obituary

On the eve of her favorite holiday, Angela Pamela DaSilva Alleyne, age 70, passed peacefully from this world on December 24, 2017 at home in Hartford. “Angie” was preceded in death by her brothers, Pritchard Alleyne (Barbados) and Ricardo Alleyne (Connecticut). She is survived by her sisters Yvette Drakes, Magna Harper (Connecticut), Mencha Collymore and Yolanda Ramsey as well as Zelia Kellman and her husband Adrian (Barbados). She is also survived by her brothers, Grattan Alleyne and his wife Betty, Vanwert Alleyne and his wife Jennifer (Connecticut) and Mario Alleyne (Barbados). She is dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and those whose lives she touched.

Angela was born on January 15, 1947 in Arthur Seat, St. Thomas Parish, Barbados, West Indies and was one of the eleven children of the late Livingston and Myrl Alleyne (née Smith). She was a graduate of Queen’s College, and subsequently worked at Hospital Sweepstakes before moving to the United States where she joined other members of the family.

Upon moving to Connecticut, Angela began a long and impressive career. Having offered years of service to Aetna Insurance Company - where she thrived in the demanding role of Executive Secretary to the company’s President  - she then transitioned into a position at the Aetna Institute for Corporate Education. At the Aetna Institute she provided extensive professional development opportunities for Aetna’s staff and had a leadership role in the Institute’s “Saturday Academy,” an academic early enrichment program offered in partnership with the Hartford Public Schools. After her retirement from Aetna, Angela’s continued commitment to her own education was clear when she earned her Master’s in Education from Cambridge College. She used that degree to help others achieve their educational goals, as she taught computer skills to hundreds of students at Capital Community College and also at the Hartford Job Corps Academy, a program that provided young people with hands-on career training.

Angela had a fulfilling life outside the workplace, she was a devoted member of Sharon Moravian Church in Barbados and then of North United Methodist Church in Hartford, where she was a soloist in the choir, an active participant in the Women’s Group as well as numerous other church groups. She enjoyed singing, and was often invited to perform at weddings and funerals for both family and friends.

While she bore no children, she dearly loved the children in the family as if they were her own. Always the teacher, many will remember that she insisted on proper spelling and grammar, found ways to teach “culture” to the younger members of the family, and ensured that they all knew The Lord’s Prayer.

Anyone who knew Angela well, knew that Angie spoke the truth and rarely hesitated to let you know how she really felt. She did not suffer fools gladly and believed that one should “cast not ye pearls before swine.” But while she had high expectations of herself and others, her sensitive heart was always obvious to those close to her.

Whether it was indulging her sweet tooth with a fancy treat, or trying out a new gourmet recipe, Angela was always trying to live life to the fullest. She enjoyed wearing a new piece of jewelry with her colorful outfits. She enjoyed time spent admiring her extensive doll collection and with her dear dog, Frosty. She loved to travel, and although she never made her dream trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, she often shared stories of her numerous trips both within the U.S. and internationally. Back at home Angela was a wonderful hostess, and she particularly loved to host family gatherings. Whether it was a party on Old Year’s Night or a summertime barbecue, Angie always found ways to bring the family together and to express her deep and abiding care and concern for others.

Angela will be deeply missed by many, but the lives that she has changed for the better, both within and beyond her family will serve as an enduring legacy of her life well spent.
