Music by The Piano Brothers

We pause to reflect on the life of Loi “Lowie” Adolphus Martin who was born on September 22nd, 1932 in Manchester, Jamaica West Indies, the third child to Mable and Alexander Martin. He was called home on June 3rd, 2020.

He started his early travel in 1957 under the Farm Work program then for permanent living, migrated to the United States of America in 1963 to pursue a better life. Being the third-born of twelve siblings, he always had that older brother protective attitude. Anyone who knew him would be able to give you stories of his no-nonsense approach, his quickness to defend, a temper/fighter, his love for dominoes and cricket but most of all,  it was just the niceness and goodness of Lowie Martin that stood out.

Dad started his early migration days as a Farm Worker and then worked in Construction.  His final employment was with the Windsor Board of Education for almost three decades, where he was instrumental in many of the schools in that area but spent his last years prior to retirement, at the Clover Street Elementary School in Windsor, CT.  His social affiliations were with the Arrowhead Café on Albany Avenue in Hartford, The Old Boys Club on Barbour Street in Hartford, CT and the West Indian Social Club (WISC). He was a Prominent Life Member of the WISC for over 45 years, from the Barbour Street days to the current location on Main Street, Hartford, CT. He contributed to this organization by the giving of his time and service, so much so, that we often refer to the WISC as his “Home away from Home” or his second home. His home church was St. Monica’s and then North United Methodist, both in Hartford, CT, where he attended and served as a Member for the last few years of his life.

He is survived by his children Owen Martin, Doreen Martin, Paulette “Chin” Martin-Mitchell (spouse Silas “Nel”), Marie Martin, Maureen Martin (spouse Earl), Myra Smith-Morgan (spouse Travis), Maurice Smith (spouse Tage), Junior (Waterbury), Emmanuel (Belle Glade, FL), Joicey (Clearwater, FL), Sammy (South Bay, FL), Joey South Bay, FL), Dessie and Ludell. Surviving siblings are: Eunice, Cynthia; Gloria, Earl and Paulette (Auntie Pee). He was predeceased by siblings: Diane, Eulalee (Auntie Tattie), Daphne, Derrick, Marvin and Lurline.

He also leaves behind 25 grand-children and 21 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, many friends and extended family members.

To everything there is a season…Rest in Peace Dad, Uncle Lowie, Loi, Mr. Martin, Grandpa, Pops, Uncle Pops, Lowie.  May we be comforted by the memories left behind.

Burial will be in Mt. St. Benedcit Cemetery, Bloomfield, CT.
