Douglas “Leon” Perry, 66, of Waterbury, Connecticut passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2018. He was born in Buena Vista, Georgia on June 11, 1952 to late Annie Lee (Prather) Perry and the late Douglas Perry. He leaves behind to cherish his memories 4 daughters, Yolanda Williams of Connecticut and husband Shawn, Shawnette Taylor-Betts of Connecticut and husband Corrie, Tiffany Bell of Connecticut and Teonna Milner of Connecticut; 10 grandchildren Milan Russell, Zaire Williams, Jalen Williams, Kamau Hightower Jr, Korahn Hightower, Troy Artis Jr, Eddie Langford IV, Jaonnie Nelson, Kayla Betts and Natalie Betts; 3 great grandchildren, Brandon Hightower, Aaliyah Hightower, and Kamren Hightower; 3 sisters Loretta Perry of Connecticut, Sheila Reveron of Connecticut and Valerie Perry-Hunter of Georgia and husband Steven. A host of aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. A special friend Shirley Minnis, childhood friend Gregory Smith and Waterbury Family (Ed, Ms. Ann; husband Charles and Sandro). Besides his loving parents, he was predeceased by his son, Kamau W. Hightower Sr., his brother Maurice Perry and his sister Gloria Perry-Whyte.

Douglas’ parents moved him to CT at an early age and he was raised in Charter Oak Terrace. Douglas served in the Marines during his early adult years but returned to CT and established a Carpet Installation business. Douglas was a jack of all trades and knew how to make a $1 out of 15 cents. He was a ladies man and if he had love for you, he called you “BAE”.  He loved the game of chess and of course his favorite candy was licorice. Douglas had style for days, impeccable taste in music and overall a badass at anything life threw his way.

Douglas is known to many as “Leon” and to a few as “Bone Perry”. However you knew him, you knew that he loved hard, always had the best intentions and always taught the fellas’ that a real man shouldn’t be afraid to express himself. Leon’s undeniable love for his mother is what kept him going every day. If you called on Leon, he would come; he might come on his time, but he would be there. Leon was a protector of his family and friends and dared anybody to tell him otherwise.

Leon had a black and white outlook on life and would say, “I’ll help you but you’re not going to take advantage of me” and “a closed mouth don’t get feed”. When Leon was in your presence he always left quite the impression. Many of those memories were good and some may have made you say, “Oh my God” but either way you’re laughing about them now.

Leon’s journey was an adventurous one and the way he died is just how he lived. He was strong willed, wrote his own rules, and a rolling stone who paved his own way. His dream was for all of his children and grandchildren to extend his legacy by coming together as a family, respecting each other’s differences, and navigating the world together.

A Memorial Service will take place on Monday, July 16, 2018 at All Faith Memorial Chapel 90 John Fitch Blvd South Windsor, CT 06074 from 5pm-7pm. Services by All Faith Memorial Chapel.

To the Perry family and loved ones-
I had the pleasure of working with Leon. We worked nights in kind of a bad neighborhood and Leon always made sure the ladies on shift got in safely. He was a true gentleman. We spoke about life and family at length. It was obvious how much he loved and treasured all of you. He had a great sense of humor and found the silver lining in even the saddest story. He gave priceless advice. I am unable to attend his services, but I wanted to extend my thoughts and prayers to Leon's loved ones at this time. My condolences to all. God bless.

Sincerely,
Julianne Barone

My deep and most sincere condolences to all Leon's family and friends who loved his dear sweet soul. This is another one of those times when life just doesn't make sense but I pray for us all that our anchors holds fast, in spite of the wings of strife and ominous storm clouds, as they will pass! This life is only temporary anyway; we're all just passing through on our way to our heavenly home. To God be the glory, we shall see our dear Leon again!

Dear Shirley and the family of Leon, I was so lucky to get to know Leon through The United Labor Agency family we had in Waterbury.
