Music by The Piano Brothers

Lonzie L. Mathis departed this life on Dec 8, 2017 unexpectedly surrounded by his family. He was born October 15, 1937 in Richland, Georgia to the late Mr. & Mrs. Wilburn and Veola Porter Mathis. He met and married Mattie (Askew) Mathis and migrated to Hartford, CT where he continued to grow his family having 8 beautiful children. He was a lifelong resident of Hartford, moving to Manchester in his later years. He worked as a welder at The Taylor & Fenn Company in Windsor, CT for over 40 years until his retirement, and operated his own plumbing business as well. Mr. Mathis, as he is affectionately known to all also loved fishing. He enjoyed his many fishing trips and loved to recruit others to join him. He loved his family and enjoyed time with his grand kids. Whether he was dropping off or picking them up from school, football practice or just running them on errands, he enjoyed and loved his family. He loved traveling and his time spent back home in Georgia visiting his nieces and nephews and other family members and friends. Mr. Mathis loved taking photos with his trusty camera and capturing moments through his lens, like weddings, birthday parties, church events, and graduations to name a few. He was a member of Phillips Metropolitan CME Church for many years, and served as a Trustee Emeritus.

He leaves to cherish his memory his 3 sons Larry Vinson (Daveny) of Decatur, GA; Jerry Latimer Mathis of Hartford, CT; and Maurice Mathis of Phoenix, AZ; his 4 daughters Martha Mathis and Sharon Mathis-McGill (Leroy) of Hartford, CT; Gloria Okoasia of New London, CT and Gaynell Mathis Smith of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter-in-law Tina Mathis of Manchester CT; a brother Abraham Mathis of Talladega, AL;  4 sisters-in-law Ernestine Sturgis of Columbus, GA; Elizabeth Williams of San Antonio, TX; Laura Betts of Manchester, CT and Barbara Mathis of Hartford, CT.  His legacy includes 26 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.  Mr. Mathis had many friends, far too many to name, and extended family as well. Many thanks to a very close friend, John “Bo” Stubbins, Jr., who assisted Mr. Mathis daily helping him in any way that he could. He was predeceased by his wife Mattie Mathis, his son Wilburn Mathis and 4 brothers Henry, John, Edward and Ted Mathis, 5 sisters Mattie Pearl Thornton, Annie Brown, Georgia Jones, Sarah Williams and Jo Anna Hall. Lonzie Mathis will be missed as the patriarch of the family, but he was needed in heaven. He will live forever in our hearts.
